Season 6
Episode 6
“You Can’t Handle the Truth”
Dean is suspicious of Sam as he
thinks Sam is a monster who let him get turned. After that they head to a town
with four suicides. The people there have been dying by hearing all of the
painful truths they never wanted to. It turns out to be the Goddess of Truth,
Veritas. She had been summoned by one of the deceased’s sisters. Of course Dean
becomes her next target, who else is more susceptible to the truth than the
Winchesters. When she begins to make the brothers tell the truth about each
other, she cuts Sam off. Saying she doesn’t believe him in a rage. The brother
break loose of her bindings and kill her. Sam begins to try to explain and Dean
proceeds to beating his face in, ending the episode.
The episode had a gradual
progression of Dean thinking Sam was a monster but as the episode progresses to
where Veritas begins to question the boys. Dean reveals that he thought Sam was
a monster but in reality he thought Sam was a reflection of himself before he went
to live with Lisa. Dean has saved many people over the course of the show but
this shows he doesn’t really think he has saved anyone. He doesn’t believe he
should have been living with Lisa, he thought he made their life worse that he
was toxic. Because that is what hunters are, at least it is inside his head.
However, after he tells that to
Veritas, to see his brother still lie about letting him turn, he lost it. After
everything that had been said, after Dean blamed himself for Sam. To find out
that all of the things he thought about his brother, all of those terrible
things about him being a monster. For all of them to be true. Add onto that,
that he had rectified in his head that Sam did not let him turn, he would never
do that to him not to him. Wrestling the entire episode to finally believing
that Sam did not let him turn and then learning that he did. How could he trust
his brother again? Yes, Sam released the Devil, he drank demon blood and has
done plenty of other things that Dean has not condoned. However, throughout all
of those things, everything terrible thing Sam has done, at no point did he
ever hurt Dean. He never wanted to use him as bait, he was ready to sell his
soul for him after he was dragged to hell. He was ready to sell his soul just
to stop him from going to hell. Dean knew all of that no matter what their bond
would survive everything. However in this one episode, in just a few minutes,
all of that shattered like glass, because for the first time, Sam legitimately
used and betrayed Dean, he let Dean become a monster. When the only thing Dean
is happy about is that he is human that he is “pure.” Well not completely pure
anymore, and we will see how all that progresses.
