Mark Pedowitz,
The Supernatural spin-off I am proposing will trace the demon-killing
Colt revolver from its origin in 1835 through its many adventures to present
day.
This is Deadwood
meets X-Files.
The first 13-one hour
episodes begin in 1835 with Samuel Colt, and will follow the gun through until
1908 with many more stories to follow.
Each episode will feature
characters that have come in contact with the most legendary Supernatural weapon in the universe. New
characters and fan favorites will make appearances: Samuel Colt, Cain, Azazel,
Billie the Kid and Pat Garrett, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Hatfields and McCoys,
Teddy Roosevelt, and Belle Starr.
The episodes will include
many monsters that Supernatural fans
may already be familiar with such as vampires, werewolves, and shapeshifters;
also introduce new creatures such as chindi, impa shilup, and vrykolakas. And
of course- demons.
The established Supernatural mythology will anchor the
storyline: the Devil's Gates, Samuel Colt's journal, Albertus Magnus, Men of
Letters, and the Winchester lineage.
This spin-off series will
solve the mystery of what happened to the Colt after Dean Winchester dropped it
in a field in Carthage Missouri after unsuccessfully killing Lucifer in
"Abandon All Hope" (Season 5, Episode 10).

Character
Overview
Ep. 1
Samuel
Colt
(21) is intelligent, fascinated with oddities and how things work. When he
first realizes that the demons, monsters and spells are real he is giddy with
excitement and eager to fight.
Charley
Parkhurst (23) is a masculine female who dresses as a male.
Charley was born Charlotte Parkhurst. She and her little sister Grace, were
orphaned when their mother was killed in a fire, which Charley remembers
looking up to see her mother on the ceiling. At the age of 12, Charley ran away
and started dressing as a man to find work (Charley Parkhurst was a real person
in history).
Azazel
(30’s)
aka the yellow-eyed demon, is as evil as expected but will be in a different
“meat suit” from what was portrayed in the original series.
Grace
(20)
pretty but twisted and bitter about being left behind in the orphanage. Her
anger over her abandonment fuels her embracing the power her demon blood gifts
have given her.
Ep. 2
Samuel
Colt (43) is older, wiser, and embittered from all the
death he has seen. He arrives in Sunrise Wyoming looking to retire from hunting
but instead finds a portal to Hell. He begins building his 100 square mile wide
Devil’s Trap to lock a Gate of Hell.
Yellow
Crow (50’s) believes he was sent to help Colt and discovers
a way to chant to make the spell over Colt’s freshly made silver bullets work
with the gun.
Ep. 3
Samuel
Colt (48) has nearly died in the last year but has managed
to retrieve everything he needs to close the gate.
James
Dillon (21) has ridden with Colt from Carthage, Missouri.
Colt was injured and James helped him. Colt has been training him. He ends up
with the colt after Samuel’s death.
Other hunters (about a
dozen) will come to help including shamans from different tribes- various ages
and sex.
Ep. 4
James
Dillon (24) (called JD by Caleb) is war weary and homesick,
stumbles into a supernatural nest of vampire and werewolves. Outnumbered,
battle-weary, and wants his friend happy but mostly wants to get out alive.
“Devil
Anse” Hatfield (25ish) is furious with his twin for
falling for “a mutt” and cannot stop the rogue vamps that begin to hunt her,
Caleb and JD.
Sarah
Hatfield (25ish) is pure-blood vampire and twin sister to Anse.
She falls in love with Caleb and gets pregnant with the first vrykolakas-
vampire/werewolf hybrid. Loads of myth and lore but none had ever survived. Her
brother is furious.
Caleb
McCoy (25) is pure-blood werewolf and son to Randall McCoy.
He and James Dillon (JD) were friends on and off the battlefield. Caleb fought
for the Union which didn’t please his family at all.
Randall
McCoy (40) is furious with his son whom he sees as a traitor
both for fighting for the north and for taking up with that “devil spawn.” He won’t
hunt his son but neither will he prevent the Hatfields from seeking justice.
Various ages and sexes of
extras for Hatfields and McCoys.
Ep. 5
James
Dillon (32) is arriving home after being gone for over a
decade to find his father has died of a mysterious illness and the rest of his
family is also becoming ill.
Matthew
Dillon (34) is the older brother, trying to hold the family
together since their father lost the old homestead several months before. He
claimed an old abandoned house and moved everyone into it. He feels awkward
because he married the girl James was sweet on before he left. He falls ill the
day James comes back.
Wyatt
Dillon (28) smart, handy around the place but feels like an
extra wheel since there is no farm to work. He helps James figure out what is
happening. He begins to show signs of the sickness just before James finds the
correct anecdote. In the end, he leaves with James to hunt monsters.
Asa
Dillon (6) is oldest child of Matt and Cara’s and is already
ill when James arrives.
Caroline
“Cara” Dillon (30) was hurt when James left without
saying goodbye. She still carries a bit of a flame for him. She is wife to
Matt, mother to Asa and Lily; she falls ill the second day.
Alice
Dillon (52) is newly widowed but strong willed. She is the
glue that holds the family together. Falls ill just before James and Wyatt
figure out what monster is causing the sicknesses.
Lily
Dillon (4) daughter of Matt and Cara; she is already ill when
James arrives.
Ep. 6
James
Dillon (37) has been riding with his brother for five years.
They work as ranch or farm hands in between hunting monsters and demons.
They’ve ranged all over the old west. They’re in Arizona talking about heading
out to California or maybe Alaska.
Wyatt
Dillon (33) He has a good relationship with his brother. They
rely on each other particularly in hunts. They always have the others back.
Frank
Cahill (30) He seems to be typical rancher in area but looks
are deceiving.
William
Bonney (18) He has a baby face, 5’6”, wiry, and mouths off
a lot. Runs into the Dillon brothers at Fort Grant. Cahill picks Bonney over
the Dillon brothers for ranch work which is strange but Bonney doesn’t realize
the danger he is in.
Ep. 7
James
Dillon (41) Four years after Wyatt’s death. He’s harder,
bitter, and drinks more. He hasn’t forgiven Bonney for getting his brother
killed. He hears Bonney has escaped from jail and is wanted by the law and
makes his way to Fort Sumner to bring him in “Dead or Alive.”
Pat
Garrett (31) Sheriff and hunter who knows Billy. He knows
that Billy couldn’t have committed the murders he’s accused of and suspects
that Billy is possessed by a demon.
Zeke
Elkins (28) is from a hunter family, he recognizes the colt
that JD carries. He knows the Elkins have had that gun in their possession
before and he wants it back, at any cost.
William
“Billy the Kid” Bonney (22) There are two Billy’s. Billy
the shapeshifter and Billy the hunter who learned a harsh lesson from the death
of Wyatt Dillon. They all manage to kill the shifter and use it as a diversion
so the real William Bonney can escape to South America to live out the rest of
his days.
Ep. 8
Theodore
“Teddy” Roosevelt (26) is a grieving widower who came west
to forget his grief. He is a new deputy sheriff but is fearless.
Seth
Bullock (35) is sheriff of Deadwood. He is calm,
level-headed, practical, and fair. He almost instantly likes Teddy but think
Crazy Steve is a tool and untrustworthy. However, he also has hunted with
others who have revealed strange things to him so he believes.
“Crazy
Steve” Elkins (36) is the older brother of Zeke Elkins
who shot James Dillon in the back in order to possess the colt. Steve tells a
different story to the lawmen, of course. He now has the gun because he says
his brother lost it to him in a poker game. He is a slippery fellow, weaving
truths in with half-truths and lies so it is difficult for anyone to know when
he is telling the truth.
Ep. 9
Belle
Starr (40) is pretty but not beautiful. She is NOT a
delicate flower but she maintains a balance between certain ladylike qualities
and being tough. She is stylish but not overdone. She is a crack shot, even at
a full gallop and can throw a blade with precision. Is murdered by black-eyed
assailants at the end of the episode.
Young
Belle (13) is a bit naïve about the world but she is friends
with Cole Younger and Jesse James who are about her age. They are teaching her
to shoot a gun and handle a knife.
Jesse
James (14) is fearless to the point of recklessness. He and
his best friend, Cole Younger are reluctantly teaching Belle to shoot. Mostly
because Cole has a crush on Belle.
Cole
Younger (13) is protective of Belle and agrees to teach her to
handle a gun. The three of them are in the woods when they witness a gunfight
between two men, one of whom has a strange mark on his arm.
Cain
(?)
Timothy Omundson.
Colette
(?)
Anna Galvin
Samuel
Colt (41) has heard of the Knights of Hell from an Albertus
Magnus. He recognizes the mark on Cain’s arm even if he is “living a peaceful
life” he is still a monster and must die. Colt’s demon-killing gun has no
effect on the Father of Murder and only because of Colette does Cain not
slaughter Colt, but leaves him badly injured. The teens witness it all.
Demons,
Colt interrupts the demons that are trying to bring Cain back to Abaddon and
Hell. Not realizing who Cain is yet, Colt kills all the demons with his gun.
Ep. 10
Laura
Ingalls Wilder (25) young mother, but has witnessed
ghosts and knows about hunters from a stint spent living in Florida for
husband’s health. She takes her daughter to the fair but an oddities show
catches her attention. In it are things she believes are real, a werewolf, etc.
She knows something is going on with people in town. The colt is in the
oddities exhibit along with some other unusual weapons.
Rose
Wilder (6) is curious but observant.
Martin
Asulan (28) looks human and harmless but is an ancient shadow
being who eats souls. He poses as a photographer with the touring oddities
show. When he has people pose for pictures, he actually plucks their souls from
them through the camera. It is how he feeds. He can only be killed by silver
and his remains must be burned or it will return.
Ep. 11
Thomas
Winchester (34) is the grandfather to Henry
Winchester. He, and the Men of Letters, have been searching for the other
demon-killing gun of Samuel Colt since Colt died. They have now tracked it to
the St. Louis World’s Fair.
Demons
(at
least 4) are after the same weapon.
Azazel
comes
to retrieve it when his demons are killed.
Ep. 12
Frank
Remington (20) is trying to prove he should be a Man of Letters.
He overhears of Samuel Colt’s revolver being in the hands of wealthy man in San
Francisco. He knows a few spells and incantations but is inexperienced and is
in over his head when Azazel and slew of demons show up.
Leo
McCarty (47) is the wealthy businessman who acquired the colt.
He is actually William Bonney.
Azazel
and
his demons come to town and eventually cause the San Francisco quake.
Ep. 13
Pat
Garrett (58) is murdered by unknown assailants.
William
Bonney (48) comes to track his friend’s killer.
Thomas
Elkins (29) is a hunter but also worked with Garrett on a
few jobs but had not seen him in over a year.
Azazel
knows
Garrett and Bonney are friends so he kills Garrett horrendously to lure Bonney
to him so he can get the colt.
Demons
Explanation
Supernatural
has
a devout and enthusiastic fan base that is deeply invested in the show, its
mythology, and its future. Many of these fans have permanently tattooed their
bodies with the Supernatural colt
revolver and its Latin motto “I will fear no evil.” This is the initial target
market - the 18-49 viewership. Westerns are becoming a popular theme again as
evidenced by The Revenant, The Hateful
Eight, and the new remake of The
Magnificent Seven.
Essentially, this idea
still follows the Supernatural road
trip story only it is on horseback on a dusty trail. This spin-off would also
follow Kripke’s original idea of taking urban legends and putting a supernatural
spin on it. The Legend of the Colt will
take legendary people, places and events and put a supernatural spin on the
traditionally told story. Pat Garrett
didn’t shoot and kill Billy the Kid. He shot a shapeshifter who looked like
Billy the Kid. The real Billy hid out in South America for a few years hunting
pishtaco and other monsters. A Young Guns meets Supernatural.
The spin-off would follow
a similar format length to the original and would air for free with commercials
on the CW website. This gives the show an opportunity to create its viewership.
Another suggestion would be to air The
Legend of the Colt in Supernatural’s
time slot on the network during the summer months when the show is on hiatus.
This would work to benefit the spin-off by capturing those loyal fans who still
desire to enjoy a supernatural show while Supernatural
is on hiatus.
Supernatural:
The Legend of the Colt is a viable spin-off series as the
colt already has a legendary status within the mythology of the Supernatural series. Despite its status
within that world, it remains a mystery, an unknown but quantifiable resource
that has never been addressed. A resource that the fans are already familiar
with. Although, longer and more in depth, The
Legend of the Colt will be similar to the origin story of the Impala in
“Swan Song”- a tale that has endeared the Impala to the fans.
